Sarah Haskins, who does the “Target Women” videos for the Current TV's Infomania, (which I only seem to catch when they are linked to on feministing—thanks feministing!) has a funny video about The McCain and Obama courtship of women (specifically former Hillary-supporting women).

All kidding aside though, Sarah is definitely on to something. Women will once again play a key role in this year’s election. Though women, who tend to vote in higher rates then do men, have long been a key demographic for candidates to try to “woo,” some recent studies suggest that unmarried women are the fastest growing voter demographic.   And I don’t know about other women, but I, too, have witnessed the way the candidates are trying to court my vote.

But here’s what strikes me as odd.  John McCain has repeatedly voted against the health of women including voting NO against requiring insurance coverage for prescription birth control and against providing Title X funding to low-income and uninsured women and families for health care services such as breast and cervical cancer screening. McCain also supports overturning Roe v. Wade.

Speaking personally, I’m taken aback that he would think he could court “the women vote” with views like that.

Sarah ended her video on a somewhat negative point, noting that the politicians only “want us for our votes.” Well, yes, they do want us for our vote—but it’s a two way street. They want me for my vote, I want them to represent me and create policies that I deem as a better for the country and that take us forward.  Overturning Roe V. Wade? Well that sounds like a step backward to me….
