McCain’s Visit to Minnesota

Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund
So last night KARE 11 had a segment about John McCain’s visit to Minnesota yesterday. It’s a story that features yesterday’s announcement that Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund (PPMNSAF) has ratified the national Planned Parenthood Action Fund’s decision to endorse Obama.
The video includes Sarah Stoesz, President and CEO of PPMNSAF, as well as a Shane Allers, from SIEU, criticizing McCain’s positions as they relate to various aspects of health care.
The story also includes McCain's regional campaign manager, Ben Golnick, refuting Stoesz's and Allers' criticism. Golnick explains that “with health care he [McCain] wants to make it more accessible, wants to, you know, help with preventative care…”
Hmmm--- well if that’s what McCain wants to do, then I have to say, he’s done a pretty terrible job.
If he supports making health care more accessible, then why did he vote against Title X funding that provides low-income and uninsured women access to reproductive health care and family planning? If he supports preventative care why did he vote against insurance coverage for birth control? Why did he oppose funding for prevention of teen pregnancy?
I’m no campaign expert, but I thought it pretty much goes without saying that one should avoid saying you support something, when you’re voting record dictates otherwise. But, I guess he does have a lot at stake---he needs to convince a lot of women to vote for him if he’s going to win against Barack Obama, the candidate who does have a voting record to support his pro-women’s health stance. And when women learn the truth about John McCain they are less likely to vote for him.
So much for “straight-talk.”
