Press Release 02.21.08 SD Legislature Passes Sonogram Bill
(St Paul) - The South Dakota legislature passed SB88, a bill that will require doctors to ask women if they want to see an ultrasound prior to any abortion procedure.
"We are in favor of women receiving all of the information they need to make private health care decisions. We're opposed to politicians like Roger Hunt practicing medicine," said Sarah Stoesz, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood South Dakota. "Doctors, not politicians, should decide what information and care is best for their patients," said Stoesz.
Earlier this session, the South Dakota legislature voted down the Birth Control Protection Act, legislation that would have made birth control more accessible to women in South Dakota. In December, Governor Rounds refused to expand Medicaid coverage to pregnant women, which would have broadened access to prenatal care and helped ensure better outcomes for women and families living in poverty.
"South Dakota already has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation. The people of South Dakota are ready for real solutions to the problem of unintended pregnancy. This bill won't prevent one unintended pregnancy and does absolutely nothing to prevent the need for abortion," said Stoesz.
